It's snowing in Ulaanbaatar
22"W x 40"L [55.5cm x 102cm]
During the last two months my neighbourhood changed from suburban Sunnybank, Australia to down town Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The seasons also changed from Summer to Winter!
Our view is from the sixth floor of an apartment block and the skyline of tall buildings changes with the time of day or fog, smog, snow or wind conditions. The dimensional challenge gave me the chance to gather, fold and manipulate synthetic fabrics I have had in the stash for some time.
Materials: cotton, silk, synthetics, threads, batting, textile inkTechniques: mono printing, machine applique, gathering, manipulation, machine quilting, hand stitching and couching
A wonderful interpretation of weather; it almost looks like a tornado, but way too beautiful! love the manipulation of fabric.
ReplyDeleteThanks Andie, the "hairy" fabrics worked well fir me as did the synthetics which hold the folds.
DeleteI love your 3-D work and the subtle white color. The manipulation of fabric is amazing. Thanks for sharing the beautiful art with us!
ReplyDeleteThe snow falls as white and sparkles with sunshine on it but turns a dull grey on the main roads that have heavy traffic. The roads are salted to prevent ice build up.
DeleteYour cityscape looks pretty accurate compared to the photos I saw! You capture the cold and falling snow swirling through the scene. Bet you are enjoying a bit of summer now :)
ReplyDeleteLoving our summer weather before I go back to Ulaanbaatar for another 6 week stint this year, while it is still minus temperatures. Thanks for your comment on the city scape. I tried to abstract the buildings and capture the feelings I had of my window views.
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful, both serene and energetic. I love the way you created dimension at the bottom; the gathered fabrics are fabulous.
